Through the use of lighting Scott creates a dystopian earth in which the viewer can experience the very crumbling of society.
The earth that we see during exterior shots is that of constant rain and overbearing shadow only held at bay by streaks of neon lights, through this we get a sense of a world that is decaying in order and in which there is little protection from threats of which could come from all angles. Interior shots similarly hold this relationship with light with dim lights illuminating otherwise shadow filled rooms further adding to the theme of being unsafe in this world. A key theme of the film is that of conflict between humanity and the artificial (replicants) with Scott’s use of lighting constantly mirroring the place in which the characters fit within this conflict- Rachel face being lit with a beam to her ultimately stepping into the darkness of the room on now knowing that she is in fact a replicant and had been living a lie.
