The elephant man (1980)
The use of monotone palette despite its time of creation emphasis old world views and intolerance of society.
A choice similarly chosen to emphasis unacceptance in the industrial elements of the film with those ridiculing and starring at Merrick being often dirty workers of which representing the masses often juxtaposed to the more accepting Dr. Fredrick who is pristine and proper in appearance in comparison. A key aspect to this film is the reaction and starring of onlookers and to tackle this Lynch constantly uses POV type pan shots in which we either see what onlookers or Merrick sees followed by their reaction. By doing such this increases our empathy for Merrick and creates a sense of discomfort produced by the often close up obvious gawping of other characters. This is significant as it helps tackles on the main themes of the story of whether we can accept someone regardless pf deformity.
